For some reason this made me cringe. Dafoe is too dull, Bowie is not very believable as Pilate, nor does he lend much strength to the role (he’s a terrific actor but miscast here I think).
This scene could have been so much more powerful.

1. How poetic to cast a Brit as Pilate!

2. Jesus certainly was more dangerous than some ill-equipped insurgents. He wanted to turn all of human society upside down.

3. Great clash of cultures, here. A Roman would think any religion could produce a magician because to them all gods are equally real.

Jesus was a faith healer, but Pilate had no faith, so there was no way to heal him – so, no miracle.

I think Bowie would have been better cast as the devil trying to tempt Jesus. Bowie has that otherworldly intelligence which makes him such an interesting artist.
